Your audio never leaves your Mac.

Last updated 23 October 2026. This page describes exactly what Inmost does, written so you can check it against the app rather than take our word for it.

Speech

Recognition runs on the machine you installed Inmost on. Audio is decoded in memory and dropped once the text is inserted. There's no server that receives your voice, no account it's filed under, and no upload path in the app for audio.

If you choose a local model that runs behind a server, that server is on 127.0.0.1 — your own machine. Inmost talks to it over the loopback interface, which doesn't touch a network.

Transcripts and history

Transcripts are stored as plain JSON lines in ~/Library/Application Support/Inmost/history/. You choose how long they are kept in Settings, and Clear History deletes them along with the diagnostics timeline.

Diagnostics

Inmost keeps a local log and one diagnostics record per dictation: audio duration, loudness, how many partial transcripts arrived, and how the utterance ended. These records contain no transcript text. They exist so a bug can be diagnosed from evidence instead of guesswork.

Feedback

Sending feedback is an explicit action. The window shows the exact bytes that will be uploaded before you press Send, and every attachment is a separate switch: diagnostics (on by default), your most recent transcript (off by default), and system information (on by default). Reports go to feedback.inmost.app, a Cloudflare Worker with a single database, and are read by the person who writes the app.

Licence

A licence key is a signed statement, not a lookup. The app verifies the signature on your Mac with a public key built into it, so dictation never asks a server for permission and works on a plane with the Wi-Fi off.

There is one call, once, when a key is activated: the key and a short hash of your Mac's hardware identifier go to license.inmost.app, so one key can't quietly become ten. That hash is not the identifier itself and can't be reversed into one; it is stored against the licence and nothing else. Reinstalling keeps the same hash, so it doesn't read as a new machine. If the call fails — no network, server down — activation still succeeds. Nothing about your audio, transcripts, usage or settings is in it.
